NGX Records Marginal Gains, ASI up 3bps

Today, the benchmark index closed at 51,817.59 points (up 3bps), aided by gains in UBN (+4.2%), FBNH (+1.8%), and SEPLAT (+0.8%). As such, YTD return printed at 21.3% while market capitalisation advanced ₦8.1bn to ₦27.9tn. Trading activity was mixed as volume traded declined 46.4% to 223.1m unitswhile value traded increased 12.0% to ₦3.9bn.

Performance was mixed across our coverage sectors as 3 sectors gained while 3 lost. Leading gainers, the Insurance and Oil & Gas indices advanced 0.4% apiece due to price uptick in CORNERSTONE (+9.1%), CHIPLC (+9.0%), and SEPLAT (+0.8%). Similarly, buy interest in UBN (+4.2%) and FBNH (+1.8%) pushed the Banking index north, up 0.3%. On the flip side, sell pressure on PZ (-9.9%), HONYFLOUR (-7.1%), and WAPCO (-2.0%) dragged the Consumer Goods and Industrial Goods indices down 0.2% and 0.1% respectively. Also, the AFR-ICT index moderated 1bp on account of price decline in AIRTELAF (-1bp).

Investor sentiment, as measured by market breadth, was unchanged at 0.04x as 20 indices gained, 17 lost while 69 closed flat. Tomorrow, we expect bargain hunting activities to spur a positive performance.
