According to Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary,  LASEMA.

He said that the further information obtained at the scene revealed that the collapse was caused by the aging and lack of maintenance of the structure. Specifically, an internal suspended beam in one of the rooms collapsed at around 7:45am. Unfortunately, the collapse resulted in the death of an elderly woman who was present in the affected area.

As of the time of this report, a search and rescue operation is ongoing at the site. LASEMA Response Team, LRU Paramedics, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and LASAMBUS are in attendance, providing necessary support and assistance. The primary objective of the ongoing operation is to locate any individuals who may be trapped or injured as a result of the collapse.

One casualty has been reported in relation to this incident. Regrettably, an elderly woman lost her life due to the impact of the partial collapse. The deceased’s identity has not been disclosed at this time.

No injuries have been reported thus far. However, the search and rescue operation may uncover individuals who require medical attention. LRU Paramedics and LASAMBUS will provide immediate medical care to any injured persons located during the operation.

The affected building has been cordoned off to ensure the safety of personnel and prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABCA) has been informed of the incident and will conduct an investigation into the structural integrity of the building. This measure will help prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure public safety.

LASEMA will continue to provide updates on the situation as it unfolds. Additional information regarding the progress of the search and rescue operation, the condition of the building, and any new developments will be shared in subsequent reports.
