This decision, effective from June 2024 and set to run for six months, aims to address recent grievances from these workers.

The approval follows a meeting between the governor, heads of tertiary institutions, and leaders of the workers’ unions, held last week in Akure. Governor Aiyedatiwa’s chief press secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, conveyed the decision in an official statement.

Previously, the workers had protested their exclusion from the N35,000 monthly wage award that civil servants in the state received between November 2023 and April 2024.

The state government had initially indicated that this award would be covered by the increased subventions allocated to the tertiary institutions. However, the institutions’ inability to fulfill this commitment led to the governor’s intervention.

To facilitate the payment, the state government has reduced the wage award for civil servants from N35,000 to N15,000, reallocating the resources to include tertiary institution workers. Additionally, pensioners in the state are now receiving a monthly wage award of N10,000.

This decision underscores the government’s commitment to equitable treatment of all state workers and aims to ensure fair compensation across various sectors.
