Nigeria Strengthens Public Relations Practice With New Initiatives
The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management to establish a degree-awarding academy for public relations practice in Nigeria. This initiative aims to elevate the standards of PR education and practice within the country.
In a related development, Dr Omoniyi Ibietan, a prominent Nigerian public relations professional, has been elected as the Secretary-General of the African Public Relations Association (APRA). His election underscores Nigeria’s leading role in advancing PR practice across Africa.
Significantly, public relations has been officially recognized as a cadre in the Federal Civil Service as of December 2023. The Information Officer Cadre has been re-designated to “Information and Public Relations Officer Cadre,” and the Executive Cadre to “Executive Officer (Information and Public Relations).” The NIPR was instrumental in championing this change, which marks a significant step in professionalizing the field.
Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening PR practice is evident. During a recent meeting with Mr. Arik Karani, President of APRA, Nigeria received commendation for its pioneering role in professionalizing public relations in Africa. Nigeria was the first African country to enact a law that professionalized PR, setting a standard that other countries like Zambia and Kenya are now following.
The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for the growth and development of the communications industry in Nigeria, ensuring that PR professionals can continue to thrive and lead on the continent.
