The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has highlighted the importance of digital birth registration and National Identification Number (NIN) registration as critical to the nation’s development.

Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General (DG) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NIMC, explained that this priority is why the commission is collaborating with the National Population Commission (NPC) on digital birth registration.

Speaking at the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative project, Coker-Odusote noted that this initiative would be recognized as one of the significant achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

A statement from Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, quoted Coker-Odusote as emphasizing the essential role of birth registration and NIN in driving Nigeria’s development. She described birth registration as a fundamental right and a vital component of the nation’s developmental strategy.

“Birth registration is not only important for the individual; it is also crucial for the development of the nation,” Coker-Odusote said. “Digital birth and NIN registration will increase access to government education, healthcare, and other social benefits, not only for the child but for all Nigerians.”

She commended the NPC for advancing the digitalization of birth registration and assured that NIMC would remain a key partner in driving the country’s social and educational transformation.

Coker-Odusote called for the support of civil society and international partners to ensure the success of this initiative, adding that NIMC would continue to provide seamless NIN registration, particularly for children under 16 years of age.

She also expressed gratitude to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her unwavering support in advancing NIN and birth registration initiatives.
