The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has emphasized the critical role of digital birth registration and National Identification Number (NIN) registration in Nigeria’s development.
The Director-General and CEO of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, noted that the commission is collaborating with the National Population Commission (NPC) to implement digital birth registration.
Speaking at the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Project, Coker-Odusote highlighted the significance of this partnership, describing it as a key achievement under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to a statement released by Kayode Adegoke, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Coker-Odusote underscored the importance of birth registration and NIN in advancing Nigeria’s development goals.
She described birth registration as a fundamental right and an essential element of the country’s developmental strategy.
“Birth registration is not only important for the individual; it is also crucial for the development of the nation,” said Coker-Odusote.
“Digital birth and NIN registration will enhance access to government services such as education, healthcare, and other social benefits, not only for the child but for all Nigerians.”
Coker-Odusote praised the NPC for its efforts to accelerate and digitalize birth registration processes and assured that NIMC would remain a strong partner in driving Nigeria’s social and educational transformation.
She called for the support of civil society and international partners to ensure the initiative’s success, noting that NIMC is committed to providing seamless NIN registration, especially for children under the age of 16.
She also expressed gratitude to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her consistent support of the NIN and birth registration initiatives.
