Petroleum unions in Akwa Ibom State have lifted their recent ban on the sale of petroleum products following a crucial meeting with the State Governor Pastor Umo Eno.

In a press release signed by the Commissioner for Information Hon. Ini Ememobong and made available to our Correspondent in Uyo on Wednesday stated that the meeting became necessary to address concerns that led to the suspension of petroleum sales across the state.

During the discussions, union leaders raised the issue of two petroleum trucks that were confiscated by federal agencies in Mbo Local Government Area in May 2024.

The trucks according to the Release have since been detained, creating tension in the petroleum supply chain. Although the matter falls under federal jurisdiction, Governor Umo Eno has directed the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways to investigate the situation by liaising with the relevant authorities to clarify the facts and expedite a resolution.

Addressing the truck confiscation issues, Governor Eno emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving the state’s petroleum infrastructure, including exploring the establishment of a petroleum depot in Akwa Ibom to ensure more efficient supply and distribution.

“We are dedicated to working with all stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the petroleum industry in our state. I am confident that with cooperation, we can ensure stability in the supply of petroleum products,” Governor Eno said.

Following the Governor’s intervention, union leaders, including Sir Michael Udofia and Joseph Otu of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), and representatives from the Petrol Tanker Drivers Association (PTD) and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), expressed appreciation for his swift action.

The union accepted to lift the ban on petroleum sales, effective immediately, ensuring that products will be available to the public without further disruption.

Union leaders praised the Governor’s proactive engagement, with Comrade Francis Udoyen of PTD stating, “The Governor’s intervention shows true leadership. We are confident that he will follow through on his promises to support our sector.”

The lifting of the ban is expected to restore normalcy to the petroleum supply across the state, alleviating concerns of potential fuel shortages that have affected both businesses and residents in recent weeks.
