The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has announced a new initiative aimed at simplifying the certification process for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the nation.

This effort aligns with global best practices and focuses on enhancing access to standards. Central to this initiative is the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, which supports local manufacturers in meeting essential quality and safety standards, vital for building consumer trust and accessing international markets.

During the recent World Standards Day celebration in Lagos, SON’s Acting Regional Director, Theresa Ojomo, emphasized the organisation’s commitment to helping SMEs thrive. She pointed out that the certification process has been made more affordable, with SON conducting only one annual inspection for micro-enterprises to reduce compliance burdens.

Yunusa Mohammed, Head of Codex, Nutrition, and Tobacco Monitoring at SON, reiterated the organisation’s dedication to ensuring consumer safety and product quality. He highlighted the investment in state-of-the-art laboratories to assist SMEs in certifying their products for both local and global markets.

Additionally, Stella Chamberlain-Okezie, SON’s Head of Marketing, underscored the importance of raising awareness about certification schemes, assuring that SON is a reliable resource for manufacturers and consumers alike.
