Nigeria, West African Nations to Launch Unified Driver’s ’s License, Vehicle Registration System
Nigeria, along with other West African countries, is set to adopt a unified driver’s license and vehicle registration system to streamline regional transportation and improve road safety.
This initiative, led by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in partnership with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Road Safety Organisation, aims to establish a standardised system for driver’s licenses, vehicle number plates, and documentation.
At a recent inter-agency collaboration workshop in Abuja, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Clement Oladele, highlighted the initiative’s goals. These include facilitating the free movement of vehicles, people, goods, and services across ECOWAS countries, as well as supporting efforts to prevent vehicle theft and multiple registrations within the region.
“This regional partnership will enhance seamless vehicle registration across West Africa and ensure efficient enforcement of traffic laws,” said Mohammed. The scheme will also introduce digital number plates with weather-resistant acrylic, improving vehicle durability and traceability.
Further innovations include linking driver’s licenses to holders’ bank accounts, allowing them to function as digital payment tools.
Mohammed added, “The FRSC’s strategy to partner with the banking sector aims to boost highway enforcement through digital integration, enhancing safety and convenience for drivers across West Africa.”
