Lagos Govt Facilitates Peace Accord Between National and State NURTW Leadership

In a significant step toward restoring stability within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Lagos State Government, through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, facilitated the signing of a peace accord between the union’s National Executive Members and the Lagos State Chapter.
The resolution meeting, held at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, this evening, was convened to address the escalating internal conflicts that had disrupted the union’s operations and affected the broader transportation sector in the state.
Addressing union leaders at the meeting, Hon. Giwa emphasized the urgent need for unity, warning that internal disputes could have far-reaching consequences on commercial activities across Lagos. “The transport sector is the lifeline of this state. If peace fails here, it reverberates through the entire economy. This accord is not just a commitment to yourselves but to every Lagosian,” he said.
Highlights of the Peace Accord
The peace accord, signed by representatives of the National and Lagos State NURTW leadership, outlines key commitments, including:
1. Commitment to Peace: Reaffirmation to maintain harmony and safeguard the welfare of union members.
2. Conflict Management: Creation of mediation mechanisms to address grievances and prevent escalation.
3. Consequences for Breaches: Clear penalties for violence, intimidation, or actions disrupting union operations.
4. Education and Training: Regular workshops to promote peaceful conflict resolution and good conduct.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation: Establishment of a joint committee to ensure compliance with the accord.
Hon. Giwa explained that the accord reaffirms the union’s dedication to unity and stability. “By signing this document, you are making a pledge to prioritize the welfare of your members and the larger community. It is a step toward safeguarding the future of transportation in Lagos,” he said.
Key Attendees
The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including the National President of NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), the Lagos State Council Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle (Aka Sego), executives from both the national and state chapters, and directors from the Ministry of Transportation.
Path Forward
With the peace accord in place, the Lagos State Government has pledged to monitor its implementation through a joint committee. Union leaders have also committed to open communication and regular training to foster mutual respect and prevent future conflicts.
This resolution is expected to restore stability within the union and ensure smooth operations in the transport sector, bringing relief to millions of Lagos residents and businesses reliant on the industry.
