The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared that he remains in his position until due process is followed to remove him.

Obasa’s statement comes after members of the Assembly unanimously impeached him on January 13, citing allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The impeachment followed accusations that Obasa spent N17 billion on the construction of a gate at the Assembly complex. He had served as Speaker since 2015.

Obasa, who was not present during the impeachment, was welcomed by supporters at his residence in the Joel Ogunnaike area of Ikeja upon his return on Saturday.

Speaking to journalists after addressing his supporters, Obasa said, “My status in the house? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it.

“I’m a Muslim, and I believe in fate. But let’s do it the way it should be done.”

When asked if he plans to pursue legal action, he responded, “You will know. It’s a matter of time. Thank you, and God bless you.”
