The Lagos State Taskforce intensified its enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles (Okada) on highways and restricted routes, seizing 82 motorcycles across key areas of the state.
The operation, which targeted major blackspots for Okada violations, covered Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Festac, and Mile 2, extending towards Berger Suya inward Mile 2 Oke. Taskforce officials said the exercise was part of a continuous effort to ensure full compliance with the government’s directive aimed at improving road safety, reducing accidents, and curbing criminal activities linked to Okada operations.
According to a senior Taskforce official, the reduced presence of commercial motorcycles on restricted roads indicates that sustained enforcement efforts are yielding positive results.
“We have observed a steady decline in the number of defiant Okada riders on highways. This shows that our enforcement operations are effective, and more operators are beginning to comply with the law,” the official stated.
The Lagos State Government initially banned Okada operations on highways and restricted routes due to growing concerns over security and safety. Over the years, commercial motorcycles have been linked to various criminal activities, including armed robbery, phone snatching, and drug peddling. In addition, their reckless operations have contributed to numerous road accidents, many of which have resulted in fatalities.
To address these concerns, the government has deployed a multi-agency approach, involving the Lagos State Taskforce, the Police, and other security agencies, to ensure that the ban is strictly enforced. The latest operation is part of a broader strategy to restore sanity to the roads and enhance public safety.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to sustaining the enforcement campaign. The government has also urged Okada riders to explore alternative legal means of livelihood, warning that defaulters will continue to face the full wrath of the law.
The Lagos State Taskforce has assured residents that it will remain vigilant in ensuring compliance with the ban, with further operations planned across different parts of the state.
