The Lagos State Government has introduced a new initiative encouraging residents to turn household waste into cash as part of efforts to deepen recycling and maintain a cleaner environment.

The “Cash for Trash” programme, managed under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), is a long-standing waste-to-wealth initiative designed to reward residents who exchange recyclable waste materials for money. The scheme aims to reduce the environmental impact of waste and promote sustainable living across the state.

In a statement and video shared via his official X handle on Monday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that residents will now receive cash rewards every Thursday for bringing in recyclable materials.

According to Wahab, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Recycling Team was present in Lagos Island, demonstrating to residents how to convert their waste into income.

He said:

“Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our #Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen!

We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city!

Get involved and see the value in your waste.”

The accompanying video shows LAWMA officials weighing sorted plastic bags on portable scales and handing out cash rewards to participants, highlighting the government’s renewed commitment to environmental sustainability and community participation.
