In a proactive move to promote water safety and reduce water-related fears among young Lagosians, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has launched the fifth edition of its flagship Water Savvy Kids Program in Badagry Local Government Area.

The week-long training is part of LASWA’s ongoing advocacy campaign designed to build a generation of confident, safety-conscious waterway users.

Now in its fifth year, the initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Dolphin Swim School (DSS) — a premier swimming institution that empowers women and children with essential aquatic skills.

Empowering Pupils Through Knowledge and Practice

The training provides participating pupils with both theoretical lessons and practical sessions in:

  • Water safety and awareness
  • Swimming techniques
  • Emergency survival skills such as floating and basic resuscitation

Through this hands-on learning approach, LASWA aims to instill water confidence in children — especially those from riverine communities who commute daily via Lagos’ inland waterways.

A total of 50 pupils from five public schools in Badagry were selected for this year’s program. The schools were carefully chosen from communities where waterway transportation is a common mode of travel, ensuring the training reaches the most impacted children.

Building a Safer Generation

As Lagos continues to expand its water transport network, initiatives like the Water Savvy Kids Program play a crucial role in ensuring that future commuters are safety-conscious, self-reliant, and confident on water.

According to LASWA, the agency remains committed to promoting a culture of water safety among children while alleviating hydrophobia (fear of water) through structured education and practical exposure.

The 2025 edition of the training commenced on Monday, October 20, and will conclude on Friday, October 24, 2025.
