The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) says it is aware of a viral video circulating online showing the challenges faced by commuters and an interaction with a bus supervisor.
In a statement released on Thursday, the authority said the feedback from the video would help strengthen regulatory oversight and improve service delivery across Lagos’ regulated public transport system.
LAMATA acknowledged the growing demand for buses across the network, noting that the relatively affordable and reliable services within the regulated transport system have attracted more commuters.
The agency also explained that rising global economic pressures and fuel costs have made regulated public transportation an important mobility option for many residents of Lagos.
According to the authority, it is working with private sector partners to accelerate the deployment of additional buses to meet the increasing demand from commuters.
LAMATA further clarified that the supervisor mentioned in the video is employed by a private Bus Operating Company and not directly by the authority. However, it stated that it is engaging operators to ensure service standards and commuter experience are maintained.
The authority also advised content creators to be mindful of privacy laws when recording videos on public transport, noting that some commuters have complained about the unauthorized filming and sharing of their images online.
LAMATA emphasized that it will not be responsible for any breach of commuter privacy resulting from content produced or shared by third parties.
The agency added that the Lagos State Government has continued to invest in transport infrastructure, including rail systems, water transport terminals and dedicated bus corridors, while encouraging greater private sector participation to expand fleet capacity.
