The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment it’s commitment to promoting Non-Motorized Transportation and creating a more sustainable city.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the government’s efforts to incorporate infrastructure for Non Motorised Transportation into the design of roads and to create dedicated lanes for cyclists.
He made this statement during an event organized in collaboration with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) to observe the annual Car-Free Day.

“This day is not just about giving our cars a rest; it is about reimagining our urban landscapes while enjoying the pleasures of walking, cycling, and skating through the use of active and public transportation,” said Osiyemi. He added that the initiative is a significant step towards reducing Lagos’ carbon footprint, improving air quality, and creating safer, more livable spaces for residents.
The event featured a variety of activities, including group cycling tours, fitness sessions, and neighborhood walks, all designed to showcase the benefits of an active lifestyle. Participants enjoyed the unique experience of navigating the usually bustling streets of Lagos in a calm, car-free environment.

Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Urban Development Initiative, Olamide Ejorh, also highlighted the importance of promoting Non-Motorized Transportation across the community.
“This event is part of efforts to raise awareness for more Nigerians to embrace NMT. It’s not just the government’s responsibility; everyone in the community can play a part in making our city more sustainable,” she stated.
Statistics were shared underscoring the health benefits of even moderate physical activity. “Did you know that just 11 minutes of brisk walking or cycling can significantly lower the risk of heart disease and increase life expectancy?” a government representative noted. “Small changes in our daily habits can lead to substantial improvements in our health and well-being.”
The celebration was not only a one-day event but a call to action for all Lagosians to incorporate these practices into their everyday lives. Residents were encouraged to consider reducing their reliance on cars by walking or cycling more often, using public transportation, or carpooling.
“We, as a responsive government, are committed to promoting Non-Motorized Transportation and will continue to integrate infrastructure for these modes of transport into our urban planning and road designs,” the Commissioner assured the crowd.
As the day unfolded, the sense of community and shared purpose was palpable. Families, friends, and neighbors took to the streets, enjoying the fresh air and the unique opportunity to connect without the usual hustle and bustle of traffic.
The 2024 Car-Free Day celebration was more than just an event; it was a reminder of the positive changes that can happen when a community comes together to embrace sustainable living. As Lagos continues to grow and evolve, initiatives like this demonstrate the city’s commitment to creating a healthier, more vibrant future for all its residents.
