Meta has announced the recipients of its inaugural Llama Impact Grants and Llama Impact Innovation Awards, celebrating innovative applications of its Llama 2 and Llama 3 models to tackle critical global challenges.

Launched in October 2023, the program aims to support projects that leverage AI to address pressing social issues, including education, healthcare, and the environment. With over 800 submissions from organizations in more than 90 countries, the initiative showcases transformative solutions that are making a meaningful impact across the world.

One of the key recipients of the Llama Impact Grants is Digital Green, in partnership with One Acre Fund. They have been awarded $500,000 USD to advance their Farmer Chat project, which focuses on providing small-scale farmers in underserved regions with personalized, on-demand agricultural advisory services.

The project uses a multilingual AI chatbot, powered by Llama’s conversational capabilities, to deliver customized information in languages such as Hindi, Swahili, and Kikuyu. By fine-tuning the model with a vast repository of agricultural data, the chatbot will offer practical, region-specific advice to farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Jacaranda Health, the runner-up, has been granted $300,000 USD to expand its digital health tool, PROMPTS. This AI-enabled platform uses SMS behavioral nudges and a clinical helpdesk to empower new and expecting mothers in Kenya, Ghana, and Eswatini with critical health information. The goal is to make PROMPTS a go-to resource for personalized maternal and newborn health support across Sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring that women receive the care they need at the right time.

In addition to the grants, Meta also recognized several organizations through its Llama Impact Innovation Awards, providing them with up to $35,000 USD, along with mentorship, partnership opportunities, and ad credits. Among the awardees is HelpMum, which has developed Vax-LlamaModel, an AI-powered, open-source tool designed to deliver accurate information about vaccination and immunization.

Leveraging Llama 3’s advanced language processing capabilities, HelpMum’s chatbot service integrates this model to provide reliable vaccination information, making it accessible to healthcare organizations worldwide.

Another recipient, the Tanzania AI Community, developed Twiga, a chatbot that supports teachers in generating exams, lesson notes, and course materials tailored to the Tanzanian curriculum. By utilizing Llama 3, Twiga addresses the shortage of quality educational resources and helps ease the workload for teachers, offering support through WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, Flow Informatics’ phosoAI project seeks to combat food insecurity in Malawi by enhancing a WhatsApp-based chatbot that delivers real-time information on food prices, availability, and agricultural practices.

The chatbot, powered by Llama 3, provides information in Chichewa and includes voice command capabilities to improve accessibility for users in low-literacy areas.

Meta’s commitment to open-source AI is evident in these awards, as the company continues to expand access to its Llama models to drive meaningful global progress. By making these powerful models available to the public, Meta hopes to inspire more innovative solutions that address the world’s most pressing challenges.
