Defence Minister Badaru Steps Down on Health Grounds

The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.

 

In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the former minister cited health concerns as the reason for his decision to step aside.

 

President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and conveyed his appreciation for Abubakar’s service to the country. The President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement before the end of the week.

 

Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment into the Federal Executive Council on August 21, 2023.

 

His exit comes at a time the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details expected to be announced in due course.
