‘How 493,556 subscribers dumped GLO, 9mobile’

As the competition among network providers continue year-on-year (YoY) in Nigeria, not less than a whopping 493,556 subscribers dumped Glo and 9mobile, as MTN edges out Airtel for the first time in 5 months.

Although, MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Glo and three other Mobile Network Operators in the country declared an increase in their assets by N804.08 billion or 0.38 per cent to N2.91trillion as of the end of 2019, against N2.11trillion recorded in 2018, latest industry statistics revealed.

The breakdown of the latest Subscribers/Network Data Report released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), showed that MTN reported the highest value in assets in 2019 with N1.53 trillion, representing an increase of 63 per cent, while compared with N939.56 billion recorded in the previous year.

As for Globacom, it declared a total assets of  N598.17billion, which indicated a marginal growth of one per cent from N592.08billion in the prior year.

Also, Airtel Nigeria grew its assets by 43 per cent to N510.99billion for the year under review, against N357.75billion stood in 2018.

Meanwhile, EMTS that operates as 9mobile, also, reported an  increase in its assets by 33 per to N217.05billion from N162.64billion that stood in the preceding year.

Further analysis of the report, stated that Smile’s assets reached N22.9billion as of the end of 2019, representing a slim growth of 0.4 per cent from N22.8billion recorded in 2018.

However, Ntel recorded 11 per cent decline in the value of assets in 2019, from N34.23billion in 2018 to N30.58billion in 2019.

The NCC report stated that the mobile operators as of December 2019 recorded a total revenue of N1.96trillion as against N1.78trillion recorded in the year 2018.

This reflects an increase of 10.11 per cent of the total revenue recorded by mobile network operators.For instance, MTN recorded the highest revenue in 2019 at N1.17trillion, while Ntel recorded the lowest sum of N4.61bn as of the end of 2019.

EMTS recorded a decline of 18 per cent in revenue generated year-on-year.

According to the report, the company’s revenue declined from N169.15bn in 2018 to N138.67bn as of the end of 2019.

The report stated that the total operating cost of the Mobile Network Operators declined from N1.40trillion in 2018 to N1.39 trillion as of the end of 2019.

This indicates a slight reduction in the operational cost of 0.53 per cent from the figures reported in 2018.

The NCC stated that the reduction in operating cost may have been as a result of investment in capital expenditure that was more efficient.

The industry’s report noted that Smile and Ntel recorded the highest percentage decline of 22 per cent and 16 per cent respectively in operating costs year-on-year.
