The Nasarawa state government says it has begun demolition of over 200 unlawful structures in the state.

Wada Yahaya, the Managing Director of the Nasarawa State Urban Development Board, stated this in a chat with journalists in Lafia.

According to him, the effect of the global warming is affecting residents of the state in the area of flooding, informing the need to embark on the demolition of over 200 illegal structures that are not registered with the government because they were built on waterways thereby endangering the lives of citizens.

Yahaya further stated that the board had given notice to occupants of the illegal structures across the 13 local government areas of the state.

He said it was worrying that citizens who registered their houses with the board as residential buildings were using the buildings for commercial purposes, charging house owners to make use of their properties based on the approval given to them by the government, arguing that the state government has served them notice.

“Some persons who registered their properties as residential buildings are using it for commercial purposes and we will not accept such illegality,” he said.
