SEPLAT to boost electricity generation with expansion of gas production

Seplat Petroleum Development Company has concluded all plans to expand more gas wells in its Oben Gas Plant in Edo State with the primary aim of providing more gas for electricity generation.

This was disclosed in a statement by the indigenous oil and gas firm stating that the expansion was achieved following the cordial relationship it enjoyed with the host communities.

Nigeria which is over 70 per cent dependence on gas to generate electricity with over 24 gas-fired power plants which are expected to require more gas supply from gas producers.

SEPLAT with an ultra-modern gas plant in Oben and accounts for about 30 per cent of gas-to-power for the national electricity grid, however, with this expansion the company is expected to account for more gas-to-power in the country.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SEPLAT, Roger Brown, announced the expansion plan when he led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the Government House in Benin.

He said the the company visited Governor Obaseki and other critical stakeholders, including host communities, to reassure them that it was alive to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

SEPLAT boss said the company would continue to create value for the federal and state governments through the payment of royalties, taxes and levies.

“To date, Oben remains a major gas hub. The company recently drilled additional new gas wells in Oben to increase further our production and our ability to meet growing demands,” Brown noted.

On its CSR initiatives, Mr Brown said SEPLAT provided medical equipment/items to the state government to support containment of the COVID-19 and also provided palliatives to the host communities during the lockdown.
