How Egbin, 8 others account for 73.7% electricity in Q1 2020-NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said that Egbin, Kanji, and seven other power plants accounted for 73.76per cent of electricity generated in Q1 2020.

It is worthy of note that nine out of the 26 operational power plants in Nigeria accounted for the said generation.

This was disclosed by NERC in its published Q1 2020 quarterly report.

According to the report the contribution of the individual power plant to the total energy output during the first quarter of 2020. Twelve (12) of the twenty-six operational power plants accounted for 82.16per cent of the total electric energy generated during the first quarter of 2020.

“Due to its highest available capacity, Egbin power plant accounted for the highest share (i.e. 14.8per cent) of the total energy output followed by Kanji hydropower plant which accounted for 10.36per cent energy share. During the same period, Sapele NIPP power plant accounted for the least share of output with 0.11per cent.

“It shows clearly that energy generation in Nigeria still heavily dependent on nine (9) power plants as these plants accounted for 73.76per cent of the total electric energy output during the first quarter of 2020.”

Further checks, however, showed that Geregu generated least out of the 7 power plant contributing to 73.79 per cent, recording 5.39per cent of electricity generated in Q1 2020.

Consequently, under the period under review, Afam VI power plant recorded 5.61per cent, Delta power plant recorded 6.44per cent, Azura-Edo recorded 6.95per cent, Shiroro power plant recorded 7.76per cent, Odukpani power plant recorded 8.02per cent, Jebba power plant recorded 8.43per cent, among others.

Also, several industry experts have opined that the over-reliance of the grid on the energy supplied by these 9 power plants poses a serious concentration risk to the industry.

Downtime in any of them may result in grid instability – except adequate proactive and precautionary measures are put in place, such as adequate spinning reserves, the medium said.
