The Lagos State Sector Commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide in a statement signed by Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi FRSC Public Education Officer in Lagos stated that the Corps is aware of the fact that many vehicles are not road worthy and compliant to extant regulations pertaining to minimum safety standards, as such the FRSC will be embarking on a four-day free vehicle safety checks to ascertain if they are fit to remain on the road or not.

Speaking further, he assured the public not to panic as no one will be arrested or charged for any offence, but it is to identify gaps and give the necessary advice on steps to be taken. “This exercise is not to issue ticket or arrest anyone one found culpable; rather it is a measure to correct any anomaly discovered in the course of the four-day check,” Ogungbemide said.

Nonetheless, vehicles with crash causing offenses will not spared but dealt with accordingly.

The Lagos Sector Commander who identified the areas for the checks to include; good tyres, good vehicle lighting system, fire extinguisher, caution signs, speed limiting device for commercial and private vehicles, advised motorists in Lagos State to make good use of the opportunity and cooperate with the operatives. He added that the Corps will clamp down on offenders after the grace period given. “All Commands in Lagos will carry out the exercise simultaneously,” he said.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to motorists to shun the purchase of used and expired tyres as it one of the most common causes of road crashes.
