The Governor Godwin Obaseki-led Edo State Government has commenced the payment of a new minimum wage of N70,000 to its workers, fulfilling a promise to increase wages from May 2024.

Obaseki announced the wage increase from N40,000 to N70,000 during the inauguration of the Labour House in Benin.

This decision, according to Obaseki, aims to address the current economic challenges and mitigate the impact of the harsh economy on the state’s residents.

In a statement, Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, confirmed the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage in May salaries, underscoring the Obaseki administration’s commitment to worker welfare.

“The Edo government has disbursed May salaries, incorporating the new N70,000 minimum wage, as promised by Governor Obaseki,” Nehikhare stated. “This action reaffirms the state government’s dedication to fulfilling its obligations promptly.”

Nehikhare also encouraged workers to maintain their dedication to their duties as a way of reciprocating the government’s gesture.
