U.S., Iran Ceasefire Collapse as Fresh Strikes Escalate Conflict

The fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran has collapsed following a fresh exchange of military strikes, raising fears of a wider conflict across the Middle East and sending fresh shockwaves through global energy markets.

The latest escalation began after the United States launched coordinated airstrikes on dozens of Iranian military targets, including missile launch facilities, air defence systems, command centres and naval installations. U.S. officials said the operation was carried out in response to recent attacks on commercial shipping and military assets linked to Iran in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, Iran condemned the strikes as an act of aggression and vowed what it described as a “crushing response,” accusing Washington of violating the ceasefire agreement that had briefly reduced hostilities between the two countries.

U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire was effectively over, warning that the United States was prepared to launch further military action if Iran continued attacks against U.S. interests and its regional allies.

The renewed fighting has heightened concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime route through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Energy analysts warned that any prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway could significantly tighten global crude supplies and drive fuel prices higher.

Oil prices rose sharply in international markets following news of the renewed hostilities as traders reacted to growing uncertainty over Middle East energy exports. Financial markets also experienced increased volatility, with investors shifting towards traditional safe-haven assets.

Regional governments have urged restraint, warning that continued military escalation could destabilise the wider Middle East. Several countries have intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing the conflict from expanding beyond the current confrontation.

International organisations have also expressed concern over the humanitarian and economic implications of the renewed conflict, calling on both Washington and Tehran to return to dialogue and avoid further actions that could threaten regional and global stability.

Despite the latest escalation, diplomatic channels have not been completely closed. Officials familiar with ongoing contacts said indirect communications between the two sides continue, although prospects for restoring the ceasefire remain uncertain as both governments adopt increasingly hardline positions.

The collapse of the truce marks one of the most dangerous phases in U.S.–Iran relations in recent years and has renewed concerns that further military exchanges could trigger a broader regional war with significant consequences for global energy security and the world economy.
