Glo-sponsored CNN African Voices spotlights stars of Netflix’s The Polygamist
South African actors Gugu Gumede and S’Dumo Mtshali, the lead stars of Netflix’s The Polygamist, will headline this week’s edition of African Voices Changemakers, the Globacom-sponsored programme on CNN International, as the telecommunications company continues to showcase outstanding African talents to a global audience.
The 30-minute magazine programme, hosted by CNN’s Larry Madowo in Johannesburg, features the two actors in an in-depth conversation about their careers, the realities of the African film industry and the experiences that have shaped their rise to prominence.
The duo also discuss the challenges of fame, avoiding typecasting and their advocacy for improved welfare, stronger protection and greater opportunities for actors across the continent.
The Polygamist, one of Netflix’s widely followed African productions, tells the story of a husband’s infidelity that shatters his family’s seemingly perfect life and draws them into the complex realities of polygamy. The drama has attracted widespread acclaim for its compelling storyline and strong performances.
Gugu Gumede, who plays Joyce Gomora, said her acting journey has been driven by passion and commitment. The 34-year-old actress trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles and is also renowned for portraying Mandisa in Generations and Mamlambo, the prophetess, in Uzalo, one of South Africa’s most-watched television dramas.
Her co-star, S’Dumo Mtshali, who plays Jonasi Gomora, rose to national prominence after winning SABC1’s reality television competition Class Act in 2010. Since then, he has featured in several acclaimed productions, including Intersexions, Inside Story, Avenged, iNumber Number: Jozi Gold, Back of the Moon and The 4 of Us.
Globacom said the special double-feature episode will premiere on Saturday at 8 a.m. on DSTV Channel 401, with repeat broadcasts at 11 a.m. the same day, 3:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, 3 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. on Monday, and 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
Additional repeat broadcasts are scheduled for the following weekend, airing Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., Sunday at 3:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Monday at 3 a.m.
