DHL expands domestic delivery as Nigerian SMEs push beyond local markets
DHL Express has launched a new domestic delivery service in Nigeria aimed at helping small businesses, online retailers and entrepreneurs move products more efficiently across the country as e-commerce and domestic trade continue to expand.
The new Domestic Select service, launched in Lagos on September 9, is designed to offer a more affordable and flexible option for less-urgent shipments, giving businesses and individuals another choice for moving parcels within Nigeria.
Country Manager of DHL Express Nigeria, Muyiwa Adeseyoju, said the service was developed in response to the growing need for reliable and cost-effective logistics as businesses expand beyond their immediate markets.
“Businesses today need delivery solutions that are dependable, accessible, and cost-effective. Domestic Select gives customers more flexibility and choice for their less urgent shipments without compromising on reliability,” he said.
According to DHL, the service is particularly suited to small and medium-sized enterprises, online retailers, entrepreneurs and corporate customers that need to send goods to customers or business partners in different parts of the country.
The company said the service would also benefit individuals shipping parcels to family and other recipients within Nigeria.
The launch comes as Nigerian businesses increasingly use digital platforms to reach customers beyond traditional geographic boundaries. For many SMEs, the ability to deliver products reliably outside their home cities has become an important part of competing for customers and expanding sales.
DHL said Domestic Select is intended to help businesses meet that demand by combining domestic delivery coverage with a lower-cost option for shipments where speed is less critical.
The economic relevance of the service lies in the role of logistics in market expansion. Businesses that can move products efficiently across state and regional borders can serve a larger customer base without necessarily establishing physical outlets in every market.
This is particularly important for smaller businesses operating with limited capital, as logistics costs can significantly affect pricing, margins and customer experience.
A dependable domestic delivery network can also reduce the friction associated with e-commerce transactions, where customers increasingly expect sellers to provide convenient delivery options after completing purchases online.
DHL said Domestic Select would draw on its existing operational network and expertise while providing greater flexibility for customers who do not require its fastest delivery option.
The company said the initiative reinforces its wider commitment to facilitating trade and supporting economic activity across the region.
However, the broader logistics challenge remains significant. Businesses continue to contend with high transportation costs, infrastructure constraints and other operating expenses that can make moving goods across Nigeria expensive.
That means the commercial value of a domestic delivery service will ultimately depend not only on reliability but also on pricing, geographic coverage and the ability to provide predictable delivery times.
For Nigeria’s growing SME and e-commerce economy, the stakes are substantial. As businesses increasingly sell beyond their immediate locations, logistics is becoming as important to growth as marketing, financing and access to customers.
Domestic Select therefore enters the market at a time when the ability to move a product efficiently from seller to customer is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage for Nigerian businesses.
