Etihad, Ibom Air open five Nigerian cities to global aviation network
Etihad Airways and Ibom Air have signed an interline agreement that will connect five Nigerian cities to the UAE carrier’s international network, opening a wider channel for tourism, investment and business travel into Nigeria from March 2027.
Under the agreement, passengers arriving in Lagos or Accra on Etihad Airways will be able to continue their journeys on Ibom Air to Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Uyo and Calabar on a single ticket, with baggage checked through to their final destinations.
The arrangement will also provide connections between Accra and Abuja, as well as Accra and Uyo, effectively extending Etihad’s reach beyond the international gateways of Lagos and Accra into other major Nigerian economic centres.
The partnership takes effect alongside Etihad’s planned launch of direct services between Abu Dhabi and West Africa. The airline is scheduled to begin daily flights to Lagos on March 23, 2027, followed by four weekly services to Accra from March 24.
Combined tickets for the two networks are expected to go on sale from November 3.
The agreement is significant for Nigeria’s aviation and wider economy because international connectivity beyond Lagos remains a major factor affecting the movement of investors, tourists, professionals and business travellers.
By linking international flights directly with domestic destinations, the arrangement could reduce the cost and complexity of travelling to commercial centres outside Lagos and improve access to cities with growing industrial, oil and gas, tourism and agricultural activity.
Etihad Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, Arik De, said the partnership reflected the airline’s long-term strategy for Africa, with Nigeria occupying a central position in its expansion plans.
He said Ibom Air’s established domestic network would allow Etihad to connect international passengers to destinations beyond Lagos while working with a local airline familiar with the Nigerian market.
For Ibom Air, the agreement provides an opportunity to increase the international traffic feeding its domestic network and strengthen its position as a regional carrier.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, George Uriesi, said the agreement would allow international passengers to access the airline’s destinations through a single booking and reinforce its role as a domestic and regional connector.
The economic benefits could extend beyond passenger traffic. Greater international connectivity can support hotel occupancy, conference and event tourism, retail spending, car hire and ground transportation, while making it easier for businesses with operations outside Lagos to receive international visitors.
The five destinations covered by the agreement also provide access to important economic clusters. Port Harcourt is a major oil and gas centre, Abuja is the nation’s political and administrative capital, while Enugu, Uyo and Calabar serve growing commercial, industrial, educational and tourism markets in the South and South-East.
The agreement also strengthens Nigeria’s position within the broader West African aviation network by linking domestic routes to an international carrier based in Abu Dhabi, a major global aviation hub.
For Ibom Air, which is seeking to strengthen its profile beyond its traditional domestic market, the partnership provides access to international passenger flows without having to establish its own long-haul network.
For Etihad, it provides a wider Nigerian footprint from the moment its Lagos and Accra services begin.
The significance of the agreement will ultimately be measured by passenger volumes, route profitability and the extent to which increased connectivity stimulates trade, tourism and investment across the destinations being linked to the global network.
