The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), over the weekend, called for urgent attention to tackle pollution, climate change impacts, and inadequate infrastructure in the Marítime sector.

This appeal was made by the managing director of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, over the weekend, at the celebration of World Maritime Day, in Lagos.

According to him, it is imperative that government and stakeholders adopt innovative solutions and meaningful dialogue to address the pressing concerns effectively.

Oyebamiji stated that the celebration of the World Maritime Day was not just a date on the calendar but an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the nation’s maritime sector while also recognizing the challenges faced.

“However, as we celebrate our successes, we must also confront the challenges that lie ahead. Issues such as pollution, climate change impacts, and inadequate infrastructure require urgent attention. It is imperative that we adopt innovative solutions and engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders to address these pressing concerns effectively.

“World Maritime Day is not just a date on the calendar; it is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our maritime sector while also recognizing the challenges we face. This year’s theme, “Navigating the Future, Safety First” resonates deeply with our commitment to fostering sustainable practices especially, within our waterways,” he pointed out.

Oyebamiji, however, stated that, NIWA is working effortlessly to improve navigability, safety, and accessibility across nation’s vast network of rivers and lakes.

“As we gather here today, let us acknowledge the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that our maritime activities contribute positively to both economic growth and environmental stewardship.

“In Nigeria, we have made significant strides in the maritime sector, especially, in enhancing our inland waterways infrastructure and services. NIWA has been at the forefront of these efforts, working tirelessly to improve navigability, safety, and accessibility across our vast network of rivers and lakes. Our initiatives have not only facilitated trade but have also provided alternative transportation routes that ease congestion on our roads.

“I urge each one of you, the government officials, industry leaders, academics, and civil society to join hands in promoting sustainable practices within our maritime sector. Let us work together to create policies that protect our waterways while fostering economic development. By doing so, we will ensure that future generations inherit a thriving maritime industry that continues to serve as a backbone for trade and commerce,” he stated.
