The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to extend the days for the National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment to Saturdays.

In a bid to register and obtain the National Identification Number, even as the country continues to battle with a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, large crowds besieged the Alausa office of NIMC in Lagos on Monday.

The Daily Times, however, gathered that failure to adhere to COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols compelled the commission to shut its Lagos office on Monday.

On what informed the decision to extend NIN enrolment days, NIMC explains in a post on its verified Twitter handle that, “In a bid to serve the public better, the HM MoC&DE @DrIsaPantami has directed the NIMC to extend NIN enrolment to Saturdays, starting from the 19th of December, 2020.  This extension cuts across all 36 States and the FCT.”

In a related development, the Federal Government has extended the deadline for the provision of National Identification Number by telecommunication service subscribers in what appears to be a response to the public outcry that greeted its two-week deadline.

In a statement jointly signed by the Executive Vice-Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (), Umar Danbatta; and Director-General, National Identity Management Commission, Aliyu Aziz on Monday, subscribers with ÑIN will get three weeks extension while those without NIN will get six weeks.

The statement read in part:“The National Task Force on National Identification Number and SIM Registration met today, 21st December, 2020.

“The meeting was chaired by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami with major stakeholders in the sector including Chairman – NCC, EVC-NCC, DG-NITDA, DG-NIMC, ECTS/ECSM-NCC, Chairman ALTON, CEOs of MTN, Airtel, Ntel, Glo, Smile, and 9Moble in attendance.

“Based on the endorsement of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the following resolutions were made:

Three (3) weeks extension for subscribers with NIN from 30th December, 2020 to 19th January, 2021; and “Six (6) weeks extension for subscribers without NIN from 30th December, 2020 to 9th February, 2021.”
