The National Air Traffic Communicators’ Association of Nigeria (NACAN) and the Aeronautical Information Management Association of Nigeria (AIMAN) are demanding the immediate exemption of aviation agencies as the policy has severely injured the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The President of NACAN, Engr Rabiu Mohammed Sani said, the policy, if left untreated, posed threat to the safety and effectiveness of operations in the sector.

“It’s already on record that activities within the entire aviation agencies are slowly tilting towards a complete halt. This is unacceptable”

According to Sani, NAMA and other aviation parastatals should not be treated as profit making organisations but rather as cost recovery bodies that struggle to ensure the safety and efficiency of their operations from the limited resources they are generating.

“Considering the economic crisis the industry faces at the moment, it would be disastrous to increase the Internally generated revenue (IGR) deduction to 50%”

“We therefore called on all Airtaffic Communicators across the Airports to comply with the Nationwide protests as directed by our  unions if our demands are not addressed” .

In a related development, the president of Aeronautical Information Management Association of Nigeria (AIMAN) Dr Ibrahim Audu, has advised the Federal Government not to compromise safety by milking the aviation agencies through revenue deductions.

Audu in an interview with newsmen, warned that the aviation industry remained critical in the economy with its vital role adding, that any attempt to compromise will lead to doom.

The AIMAN president remarked that the agencies in the sector were yearning for bail out with the rising costs of equipment and maintenance adding that it was becoming difficult to train and retrain professionals

Audu said the continued deduction of the 50% generated revenue by aviation agencies was not in the interest of the aviation sector adding, that it has negatively affected the morale of workers AIMAN boss warned that aviation industry must not be used as a dumping ground by experimenting deduction but to encourage the agencies.

It would be recalled that the unions comprising the National Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals( ANAP), National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees and the Air Transports Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSSAN) have concluded plans to embark on a nationwide protest on September 18th  to demand the discontinuation of 50 per cent from the internally generated revenue of the agencies through an exemption.
