The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has organised a one-day training programme for officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, to strengthen enforcement of compulsory insurance policies and improve verification of insurance certificates.

The training, held in Abuja, focused on enhancing compliance with Motor Third-Party Insurance and other mandatory insurance policies, while equipping police officers with the knowledge required to identify genuine insurance certificates and discourage the use of fake documents.

The programme, themed “Building a Culture of Insurance Compliance: Police as Catalysts for Protecting Lives, Property and Enhancing Public Safety,” sought to deepen collaboration between NAICOM and the Nigeria Police Force in promoting insurance compliance nationwide.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Mr Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Mr Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon described the partnership between the commission and the police as critical to improving public safety and reducing financial losses arising from accidents and other unforeseen events.

He said effective public safety goes beyond crime prevention and law enforcement, noting that insurance serves as an important social and economic safety net for individuals, businesses and public institutions.

According to him, stronger collaboration between both organisations will help reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads, curb the use of fake insurance certificates, protect road users and strengthen public confidence in regulatory institutions.

Gam-Ikon stated that the initiative aligns with the provisions of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and NAICOM’s mandate to deepen insurance penetration and improve compliance with compulsory insurance laws.

He noted that police officers occupy a strategic position in advancing insurance compliance through their daily interactions with motorists, business owners and members of the public.

“By promoting compliance with compulsory insurance laws, police officers contribute significantly to the protection of lives and property, reduce the financial hardship associated with accidents and enhance public safety,” he said.

Participants at the training received practical guidance on the objectives and benefits of compulsory insurance, procedures for verifying insurance policies, methods of identifying genuine insurance certificates and the legal framework governing compliance with Motor Third-Party Insurance and other compulsory insurance policies.

The programme also provided an opportunity to strengthen institutional collaboration between NAICOM and the Nigeria Police Force while encouraging officers to serve as advocates for insurance awareness within their various areas of responsibility.

NAICOM reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to increase insurance awareness, improve compliance, discourage the use of fake insurance certificates and ensure the insurance industry continues to support Nigeria’s economic growth and social stability.

The commission urged officers of the FCT Command to champion insurance compliance and promote a culture where insurance is recognised not merely as a statutory obligation but as an essential tool for safeguarding lives, property, investments and livelihoods.
