The Regional General Manager of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, Ahmed Danjuma, has identified inadequate infrastructure, funding constraints, cybersecurity threats and climate-related disruptions as some of the major challenges undermining efficient airport operations in Nigeria.

He also listed skills shortages, regulatory complexities and rising passenger demand as growing pressures confronting airport managers, stressing the need for airports to strike a balance between safety, operational efficiency and sustainability despite limited resources.

Danjuma made the remarks while presenting a paper titled “Operational Performance and Airport Business Opportunities” at the Airport Business Summit in Lagos.

Represented by the International Terminal Manager of NAIA, Alhaji Abdullahi Lawal, he said operational efficiency has become a strategic imperative rather than merely a cost-saving measure, noting that it provides airports with a competitive edge while enhancing profitability, passenger experience, airline confidence and national economic development.

According to him, operational excellence forms the foundation upon which world-class airports build sustainable growth, commercial success and customer trust.

He explained that efficient airport operations involve delivering safe, secure and reliable services while maximising the use of available resources.

“It minimises delays, reduces operational costs, maximises infrastructure capacity and ensures seamless experiences for passengers, airlines and other airport stakeholders,” he said.

Danjuma stressed that operational efficiency is now a strategic asset capable of driving profitability, customer satisfaction, airline confidence and long-term business sustainability.

He maintained that airports that embrace operational excellence would be better positioned to compete in an increasingly dynamic aviation environment.

“An efficient airport is a competitive airport,” he stated.

Highlighting business opportunities within the sector, Danjuma described cargo and logistics operations as a major growth area, saying efficient cargo handling, digital documentation and streamlined customs procedures could position airports as regional logistics and distribution hubs.

According to him, this would not only support international trade but also attract investment and stimulate regional economic growth.

He added that strong operational performance enhances airline confidence, improves passenger satisfaction, drives revenue growth, optimises asset utilisation and strengthens safety and regulatory compliance.

The airport manager further described technology as a “game-changer” for airport management, noting that automation is accelerating check-in and boarding processes while artificial intelligence is increasingly being deployed to predict maintenance requirements and improve operational efficiency.

To strengthen airport administration, Danjuma recommended the establishment of Airport Operations Control Centres, increased investment in digital transformation, stronger collaboration among industry stakeholders and the deployment of real-time executive dashboards to monitor key performance indicators.

He also advocated sustained investment in workforce development, expansion of non-aeronautical revenue streams, and integration of sustainability into operational planning, greater public-private partnerships and the adoption of more flexible airport business models.
