Nigeria Customs unveils digital file tracker to boost trade efficiency

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a new Management Information System (MIS) File Tracker at its PTML Area Command in Lagos, marking another milestone in the agency’s digital transformation drive aimed at improving administrative efficiency, accelerating cargo clearance and strengthening Nigeria’s trade facilitation framework.

The initiative forms part of the Service’s broader modernisation agenda to deploy technology-driven solutions that enhance transparency, streamline internal processes and support seamless cross-border trade, while reinforcing the Federal Government’s objective of improving the ease of doing business.

Speaking at the unveiling, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, said the platform builds on recent digital reforms introduced by the Service, including the Nigeria Trade Portal, the Customs Verification Management System and the Unified Customs Management System, known as B’Odogwu.

Represented by the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of ICT and Modernisation, Mrs Oluyomi Adebakin, Adeniyi said the MIS File Tracker demonstrates the Service’s commitment to adopting global best practices by digitising administrative processes and improving operational efficiency across its commands.

He explained that the platform operates as an enterprise-wide solution with a Single Sign-On feature, providing a unified data platform for administrative functions while eliminating duplication, reducing paperwork and supporting faster decision-making.

According to him, officers will use the system for leave and pass applications, file tracking, duty rosters, internal staff orders, nominal rolls and other personnel-related processes, while integrated feedback mechanisms will enable continuous improvements to the platform.

Adeniyi noted that automating these internal processes would enhance service delivery, improve accountability and allow the Service to deploy more resources towards its core responsibilities of revenue generation, trade facilitation and border security.

He added that the PTML Area Command has consistently remained at the forefront of Customs’ digital innovation, having previously piloted several technology-driven initiatives that have transformed cargo processing and customs administration.

Earlier, the Acting Controller of the PTML Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Nura Miko, described the deployment of the MIS File Tracker as another significant step towards building one of Africa’s most technologically advanced customs administrations.

He said the command is leveraging digital solutions introduced by the Customs management to simplify cargo clearance procedures and improve operational efficiency.

Miko disclosed that the command is also working to reduce the clearance time for compliant Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) cargo from two hours to one hour, a move expected to lower logistics costs, improve cargo turnaround time and strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness as a regional trade hub.

He expressed confidence that successful implementation of the platform at PTML would provide a model for nationwide deployment as the Service continues its digital transformation programme.

The latest initiative underscores the Nigeria Customs Service’s strategy of deploying technology not only to improve internal governance but also to facilitate trade, strengthen revenue administration and enhance the efficiency of Nigeria’s maritime logistics ecosystem.
