NIMASA Backs Green Shipping Initiative to Drive Maritime Decarbonisation

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting green shipping, maritime decarbonisation and environmental sustainability as part of efforts to position Nigeria for a low-carbon maritime future.

Mobereola gave the assurance during a strategic meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Natural Eco Capital Limited, Dr. Eugene Itua, where both parties discussed initiatives aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable maritime industry.

According to the NIMASA boss, collaboration between government agencies, the private sector and other stakeholders remains critical to achieving the country’s environmental sustainability goals and strengthening the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime sector.

During the engagement, Itua presented the Nigerian Green Shipping Excellence Programme (NGSEP) and the Green Maritime Recognition Scheme (GMRS), explaining that the initiatives are designed to promote maritime decarbonisation, encourage the adoption of cleaner technologies, attract climate investments and position Nigeria as a regional leader in sustainable shipping.

Mobereola commended the proposals, describing them as practical and innovative approaches capable of supporting global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

He stressed that addressing climate change and protecting the marine environment require strong partnerships and sustained investment in environmentally friendly technologies.

The NIMASA Director-General said the agency remains committed to initiatives that will drive green shipping, enhance marine environmental protection and support the sustainable development of Nigeria’s blue economy.

He added that strategic partnerships with the private sector are essential to delivering practical solutions that will accelerate the country’s transition to cleaner shipping while boosting the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

The proposed programmes are expected to support Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon maritime sector, attract climate investments and contribute to the sustainable growth of the nation’s marine and blue economy.
