Lagos Targets Safer Roads With Tougher Driving Standards

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety through continuous Lagos State Governments training and professional development of driving school operators and instructors.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated this at the 2026 Driving School Instructors and Operators Train-the-Trainer Workshop, themed, “Enhancing Road Safety through Continuous Training and Education of Driving School Operators in Lagos State.”

Osiyemi said driving schools remain critical to producing responsible motorists by equipping learners with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for safe driving.

He called for stricter instructor certification, standardised training curricula, rigorous testing, background checks, periodic re-licensing and continuous professional development.

According to him, instructors must also receive regular training in defensive driving, hazard perception, vehicle technology and emerging traffic regulations.

The Commissioner said the increasing number of vehicles on Lagos roads made continuous capacity building essential to reducing road crashes and fatalities.

He urged driving school operators to embrace regular refresher courses and maintain high professional standards, stressing that properly trained instructors are central to building a safer road culture across the state.
