The Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Olusegun Ogungbemide, has advised drivers in the state to drive cautiously this wet season as the roads get flooded following the continuous rainfall in the past few days.

Ogungbemide, a Corps Commander, said the advisory was to avert the hazards usually associated with heavy rain and flood resulting in some vehicles and road users being swept away as recorded recently.

In a press statement by the Public Education Officer, Olabisi Sonusi, the Sector Commander expressed concern that the downpour does not only result in loss of lives and property, but also creates enormous traffic challenges.

He urged all road users in the area, especially drivers, to join hands to tackle the menace.

According to him, with the rainy season being experienced almost every day in the state, incidents of flooding and vehicles and passengers being swept away are becoming daily occurrence.

He noted that as the lead agency in road traffic management and safety administration in the state, the Lagos State Sector Command is concerned with the ugly trend and called on all stakeholders to act fast by adhering strictly to the safety rules.

The sector commander observed that not only is the downpour accompanied with flood that obstruct the road and hampers free movement of vehicles, it also causes poor visibility for drivers.

He, therefore, advised drivers to take all necessary safety precautions whenever it’s raining, “Our advice is that drivers must operate with utmost caution and safety-consciousness to avert the hazards associated with the weather conditions.”

He further enjoined drivers to park in safe places and allow the flood to recede before proceeding on their journey.

Ogungbemide also directed patrol teams to look out for vehicles that violate the requirements for minimum safety standards, saying such vehicles must be impounded to the base to get their faults rectified, thereby stopping them from causing hazards to themselves and other road users.

“All drivers must ensure that they drive with minimum safety standards by fixing the safety gadgets to avert the menace associated with rainy season,” he said.
