NRC Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance on Drug Abuse, Tightens Rail Safety Measures
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to maintaining a drug-free railway system, declaring a zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the nation’s rail network.
Speaking on Friday during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Dr. Opeifa said drug abuse poses a major threat not only to public health but also to railway safety, security and efficient operations.
According to him, the NRC, which transports millions of passengers and large volumes of goods across Nigeria, cannot afford the risks associated with impaired judgment by railway personnel or the use of rail corridors for criminal activities.
He disclosed that the corporation is strengthening collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Railway Police Force and staff unions to prevent the trafficking of illicit substances through railway stations, train corridors and operational facilities.
The NRC boss said the corporation would continue to intensify awareness campaigns, education and counselling programmes for employees and host communities, while encouraging staff battling substance abuse to seek confidential support without fear of stigma.
Dr. Opeifa also called on passengers, railway workers and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that railway safety is a shared responsibility.
He urged Nigerians to embrace a drug-free lifestyle, saying the corporation remains committed to ensuring that the nation’s railway system remains safe, secure and efficient in support of national development.
